The Catechism Explained by Fr. Spirago
$36.00 – $50.00
At long last, the Catechism explained by Fr. Spirago is back in print. This edition is not a facsimile, but a full reprint with increased font size, and very minor updates to antiquated English. Some of the numbering has been redrafted to avoid confusion.
We already have so many catechisms, what do we need of another? We indeed have in abundance catechisms and religious manuals which appeal only to the intellect; books that do not aim at the warmth of expression and the fervent, persuasive eloquence which appeal to the heart, the force and vivifying power which affect the will through the influence of the Holy Spirit.
This Catechism aims at cultivating all the three powers of the soul: the intellect, the emotions, and the will. It does not therefore content itself with mere definitions. The idea in it is not to teach men to philosophize about religion, but to make them good Christians who will delight in their faith. Consequently questions of scholastic theology, doctrines debated among theologians, are either omitted altogether or merely receive a passing mention.
In this catechism, Fr. Spirago has endeavored to divest religious teaching of the appearance of learning, and to present it in a popular and simple form. Technical terms, in which almost all religious manuals abound, even those intended for children, are carefully eliminated from his pages since, while useful and necessary for seminarians and theologians, they are out of place in a book intended for the laity. Popular manuals of religion ought to be couched in plain and simple language, like that used by Our Lord and the apostles, easy to understand. What we need is something that will touch the heart and influence the will, not merely cram the mind with knowledge.
“The Catechism Explained by Spirago embodies the Catechism of the Council of Trent, yet contains fuller discussions for each point in the language that was developed by the Church, saints and theologians throughout time. Rather than being locked into a specific age or decade, this catechism is an explication of the faith in an almost timeless manner. It is a catechism that any subsequent generation could read and learn the essence of the Catholic faith.”
-Fr. Chad Ripperger, PhD

This catechism is pure treasure. I came across this old catechism a couple years ago and have other reprints. Looking forward to receiving this new printed version. The original book was published in 1899, then again in 1921. It is massive powerhouse of knowledge. The index is over 20 pages long and by simply reading this, one can obtain a lot of knowledge. Open any page at random and you’ll find treasure. Having been published in 1899 it contains none of the modern errors which have crept into Catholic teachings.

Having this Catechism has been a Blessing to my Family. It goes in depth into the teachings of the Church while at the same time presents it in a easy to read way. Its Very Clear and it definitely holds no punches. It uses references and quotes from Councils, Early Church Fathers. Doctors of the Church and especially Scripture. Best of all the explanations are relatable to our own day. As if it was written only a few years ago. To be honest ive always struggled to read catechisms and now im reading this version every single morning and sometimes evenings. And also the pages, print, and binding are such great quality that this book will easily last for Generations as it should. If youre the type that Loves a book with a great feel to it on the cover and pages(Like Myself) You will LOVE this book. This is a MUST have for every Catholic household. It will also make an Excellent Gift. It has certainly became required reading in our home. Thanks to Medatrix Press for this version.

My Catholic Education wasn’t great so this has been an enormous help in learning the doctrines and moral teaching of the Catholic Faith. It’s written very clearly and is easy to understand. And it’s also completely trustworthy; it’s not watered down or presented with modern errors .

By far the best Catechism I have ever come across! It’s a true rival to the CCC and Catechism if Trent! Even better, it’s actually fun to read and a page turner!

Already had a separate copy of the Council of Trent Catechism, but this Explanation takes the Roman Catechism to another level and is a timeless classic of our Faith. The depth of information along with the clear explanations are unrivaled. One could use this for a single spiritual reading book for years. Words do not do justice as to the information, even if just the bolded texts were read and pondered. What a wonderful book for teaching an RCIA class!
As Fr Chad Ripperger says in the foreword, this is a timeless catechism by which all others are to be judged.

The content is good, including a plethora of practical analogies; However, the editing is very poor. Page 438 “For every act of mercy done to ns…” What is ns? The biblical references are often incorrect, especially the psalms, even after accounting for the differences in enumeration. Because of this, I began checking all of the biblical references. I found three incorrect citations on one page alone. For example, page 441 (4) “To the poor first all of the Gospel is preached (Matt 11:6).” The correct citation is Matt 11:5. Page 441 (5) “God Who feeds the birds of the air…(Matt 5:25-30).” The correct citation is Matt 6, not 5. Psalm 36:25 cited in the same paragraph is also incorrect. It should be Psalm 37. The errors seems systematic, off by one chapter or one verse hear and there. I don’t know if we switched to computer editing in this century, but the editing today is very poor.

The subtitle says it all: “An Exhaustive Explanation of the Christian Religion”
Truly it is. This thing is a tome; around 2 inches thick, it has (presumably) everything a Catholic could ever need to get to know his Faith.
As a seminarian, this will be a solid resource.
Worth the extra for Hardcover!
